“Hey, You” – Pink Floyd Under the “Tarot-scope”

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I believe I’ve found the ideal use for the Waite-Smith tarot deck. (All images used here are copyright of U.S. Games Systems, Stamford, CT, although I understand the RWS deck may now be in the public domain.)

Roger Water’s somber and occasionally morose lyrics (often about Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barret’s fractured mental state, kind of a leitmotif in his work) seem perfect for my experiments in assigning cards to the verses of famous poems and popular songs. Here I’m tackling “Hey, You” from The Wall. Each series follows the “narrative path” through the verse; for the three-card sets it might be worthwhile to consider the middle card as the “turning point” and use Elemental Dignities to determine its relative potency. (Note that I reversed some of the cards to express the “interrogatory” nature of a given line; making them more conjectural than declarative.)

Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old
Can you feel me?

5 of Pentacles; Hermit; 2 of Cups reversed (emotional separation)

Hey you, standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Can you feel me?

8 of Swords; 9 of Wands; 6 of Cups reversed (emotional dissonance)

Hey you, don’t help them to bury the light
Don’t give in without a fight

Sun reversed; 7 of Wands

Hey you out there on your own
Sitting naked by the phone
Would you touch me?

2 of Swords; the Star; 2 of Pentacles reversed (looking squeamish about being touched)

Hey you with you ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out
Would you touc
h me?

High Priestess; Judgement; 4 of Pentacles reversed (looking even more reluctant to be touched)

Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, I’m coming home

10 of Wands; 10 of Cups

But it was only fantasy
The wall was too high
As you can see

7 of Cups; 9 of Swords; Magician

No matter how he tried
He could not break free
And the worms ate into his brain

5 of Wands; Hanged Man; the Devil

Hey you, out there on the road
Always doing what you’re told
Can you help me?

The Chariot; Page of Pentacles; 6 of Pentacles

Hey you, out there beyond the wall
Breaking bottles in the hall
Can you help me?

The Fool; the Tower; 6 of Swords

Hey you, don’t tell me there’s no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall

8 of Cups; 3 of Cups; 5 of Swords
